George Washington Gordon is my great (x3) grandfather. He was born September 27, 1802 in Madison , Kentucky
to David Gordon and Jane Boyle. David
Gordon was one of 35 men that organized the Smithton Company to buy and resell
the land located in present-day downtown Columbia
and its surroundings. In a deed (Boone
Co., Vol L, pg 405) dated June 14,1839, David and Jane Gordon of Boone County
sold to the State of Missouri for $5.00 for the location of the State
University of Missouri.
George W. Gordon was a blacksmith by trade and owned his own
shop in town. He was married three times: (1)
Elizabeth “Jane” Maupin, (2) Harriet Daniels, and (3) Ann Eliza Wright (my
great-x3 grandmother who is also pictured).
I believe George had a total of 15 children. George and Ann Eliza married May 14, 1857 in Boone County . Ann
Eliza Wright was the daughter of Boone County Surveyor, Peter Wright and
Jeanette “Jane” Edmondson. Ann Eliza was
previously married to Fauntleroy Nutt until he died in 1852, the same year they
married. George W. and Ann Eliza had 2
children: son, Dr. James Gordon who married Mary Garth and daughter, Jeanette
E. Gordon who married Thomas Jefferson Gray, all of Boone County .
